Book Report Part 1

Today, in my Civil War book, I read about the Confederate general Thomas J Jackson. He was born in 1824 and was raised an orphan by relatives in Virginia. He was raised without education and was at a disadvantage when he entered West Point. With a lot of work, he managed to graduate. When the United States went to war with Mexico in 1846, he won the admiration of his superiors as an artillery officer. In the 1850s, he was a professor at the Virginia Military Institute, and in 1861, he chose to serve the Confederacy out of loyalty to his home state. When given command of a brigade, he transformed it into a disciplined force. As his infantry stood firm on Henry House Hill, facing a Union onslaught, Confederate general Barnard E Bee cried “There stands Jackson like a stone wall!”. Thereafter, Jackson was known as Stonewall Jackson.
